I received the email a week before Heather & David’s big day. "Due to Hurricane Helene, we can no longer host Heather & David’s wedding on October 6th” and I literally felt my heart break for them…our community had just experienced a natural disaster and Avery County was one of the hardest hit areas in the High Country which also happened to be where Appalachian View is located.
Not only was the High Country completed rocked by this storm, but the wedding industry in Western North Carolina was severely impacted as well. Catering teams had their entire kitchens washed away in the flood, several venues located along the water completely destroyed. Roads leading to venues were inaccessible and there was one cancelation after another after another. I was absolutely heartbroken for all the couples who had to cancel their weddings but I was even more blown away by their attitudes.
Every single one of my clients checked on me. Many sent me money as I was hosting many friends who lost their homes or didn’t have access to clean water or power. I even had a Mother of one of my Brides come all the way to Boone and deliver a van FULL of supplies that I personally distributed the next day in Lansing. I am typing this with the biggest lump in my throat because I am still SO touched by how many people showed up for our community in such a dire time of need.
We had one miracle after another show itself in the weeks after the storm. Heather & David didn’t even bat an eye when we told them we had to reschedule and luckily there was an opening at the venue on November 9th, and by some miracle all of their scheduled vendors were available that day and nearly all of their guests were able to work through their schedules and attend their big day.
I have never been so thankful for such a calm, cool, and collected couple who handled all of this so incredibly. They were nothing but kind, patient, and understanding with all of the vendors and venues that were impacted by the storm.
I met Heather & David while I was setting up for the Millsap’s wedding at Appalachian View back in April. They were touring the venue and my husband elbowed me and said “go give them your business card!” so I did…and sure enough…I received a text from her a few days later wishing to hire me for my services!
Heather and David own their own catering business (Kade’s Kitchen) and so when they volunteered to cater their own wedding, it had me quite nervous. But how could I ever doubt them with their calm demeaner! Not everyone is built to play such a big role at their own wedding but they absolutely killed it.
On top of catering their own wedding, they were juggling two little ones at the same time! Their oldest daughter who served as the cutest flower girl, barfed all over herself on the way to the venue in the car and her littlest one was still breastfeeding. Not once did Heather seem even the least bit overwhelmed.
And David not only wore the catering hat, but also served as the “DJ” for their wedding! He was in charge of all the playlists as well as playing the right songs during the ceremony WHILE he was standing up at the alter. I am literally blown away by this couple!
It was a beautiful celebration and we couldn’t have asked for better weather on this particular early November evening. Clear blue skies, no wind, and a stunning sunset. All the vendors worked seamlessly together and the day couldn’t have gone any smoother for this VERY deserving couple.
